Engineering Attributes of Commercial Grade 2 Titanium

Understand why international engineering teams specify Grade 2 unalloyed titanium fittings for corrosive chemical processes and weight-sensitive marine infrastructure.

Exceptionally Low Density

At approximately 4.51 g/cm³, titanium weighs nearly 45% less than conventional austenitic stainless steel, reducing structural pipe support requirements on offshore platforms, aerospace systems, and marine superstructures without sacrificing strength.

Protective Stable Oxide Layer

Titanium naturally develops a spontaneous, strongly adherent titanium dioxide (TiO₂) film upon air or moisture contact. This passive layer immediately repairs itself if abraded, yielding superior immunity to chloride stress corrosion and oxidizing acids.

High Strength-to-Weight Ratio

Commercial Grade 2 unalloyed titanium delivers optimal mechanical yield strength (min. 275 MPa) and ductility (20% elongation), ensuring reliable, non-brittle continuous service up to 800°F (427°C) and intermittent operations up to 1000°F (538°C).

Technical FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Titanium Fittings

What is the difference between Grade 2 and Grade 5 titanium fittings?
Titanium Grade 2 (UNS R50400) is commercially pure unalloyed titanium offering optimal cold forming, excellent field weldability, and exceptional corrosion resistance in chemical and marine service. Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V / UNS R56400) is an alpha-beta alloy with significantly higher tensile and fatigue strength, preferred in aerospace, offshore downhole, and high-stress rotating equipment.
Why must titanium welding be shielded with inert gas?
At temperatures above 400°C (750°F), titanium aggressively absorbs atmospheric oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. This contamination causes lattice distortion and embrittlement in the weld pool and heat-affected zone. All titanium buttweld fittings must therefore be welded under strictly maintained high-purity argon trailing and backing shielding.
Can titanium pipe fittings be mated directly to stainless steel flanges?
Direct contact between titanium and stainless steel in an electrolyte (such as seawater or brine) can initiate galvanic corrosion due to differences in electrical potential. When joining titanium piping to other alloys, engineers specify insulating gasket kits (dielectric sleeves and washers) or titanium lap joint stub ends paired with backing flanges.
What quality test certificates accompany every export consignment?
Every consignment is delivered with an authentic EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate indicating exact ladle chemistry, mechanical tensile and yield testing, elongation, dimensional inspection reports, visual examination signoffs, and 100% positive material identification (PMI) results.
