Engineering Standard for BS 10 Pipe Flanges & Bolting

British Standard 10 (BS 10:1962) defines dimensions, bolt circles, nominal thickness, and pressure-temperature boundaries for flanges used in industrial piping, valves, pumps, and containment systems. Classified by lettered tables (Table D, Table E, Table F, Table H, Table J, Table K, Table R, Table S, Table T), the standard establishes reliable duty ratings from low-pressure utility lines up to 2800 psi severe hydraulic service.

BS 10 Flange Table Comparison: D, E, F, H, J, and K

Understanding the dimensional differences, bolt counts, and working pressures among the primary BS 10 tables allows project engineers and procurement managers to ensure joint integrity across utility and process piping.

BS 10 Table D Flanges

BS 10 Table D Flanges

Designed for low-pressure cooling water, municipal utilities, and light-duty steam systems. Rated for 100 psi (approx. 7 bar) at temperatures from -18°C to 230°C, with hydraulic test pressure at 150 psi.

BS 10 Table E Flanges

BS 10 Table E Flanges

The most widely installed British Standard flange for process plants and commercial piping. Rated up to 200 psi (14 bar) at working temperatures up to 230°C, offering thicker profiles than Table D.

BS 10 Table F Flanges

BS 10 Table F Flanges

Heavy-duty flanges for medium-pressure steam, oil pipelines, and boiler lines. Rated for 300 psi (21 bar) working pressure up to 230°C, and hydraulic test pressure proofed to 450 psi.

BS 10 Table H and J Flanges

BS 10 Table H & J Flanges

Engineered for high-pressure industrial service and power generation. Table H delivers 500 psi (35 bar) rating with 750 psi test, while Table J operates at 700 psi (48 bar) with a 1050 psi proof load.

Procurement FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions on BS 10 Flanges

What is the BS 10 flange specification?
BS 10:1962 is the British Standard specification for flanges and bolting for pipes, valves, and fittings. It uses lettered tables (Table D, E, F, H, J, K, etc.) to establish flange outer diameters, thickness, bolt patterns, and pressure ratings for steam, water, and industrial processing systems.
Can BS 10 Table D and Table E flanges mate together?
In pipe sizes from 1/2 inch to 4 inches, BS 10 Table D and Table E have identical bolt circles (PCD) and bolt counts (4 holes), allowing them to physically bolt together. However, starting at 4 inches and above, bolt quantities differ (e.g., 4-inch Table D has 4 bolts, while Table E has 8 bolts), so they cannot be mated directly without transition adapters.
How does BS 10 compare to ASME B16.5 and EN 1092-1?
BS 10 is an imperial-based standard originally developed in the United Kingdom. While ASME B16.5 uses Class ratings (Class 150, 300, etc.) and EN 1092-1 utilizes metric PN designations (PN10, PN16, PN40), BS 10 uses letter tables. Because bolt circle dimensions and thicknesses differ, BS 10 flanges will generally not mate with ASME or EN flanges unless customized adapter flanges are manufactured.
Which material grades do you forge for BS 10 flanges?
We produce BS 10 flanges in ASTM A105 forged carbon steel, ASTM A350 LF2 for low-temperature applications, ASTM A182 austenitic stainless steel (F304/304L, F316/316L, 321), Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, Cu-Ni alloys (90/10, 70/30), Inconel 625, and Hastelloy C276.
What quality test certificates accompany BS 10 shipments?
Every order is dispatched with complete EN 10204 Type 3.1 Mill Test Certificates verifying ladle chemistry, mechanical tensile and yield test results, elongation, impact values (where applicable), and hardness, with full heat number traceability back to the mother ingot.
